When I went to the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing with Facebook for the first time in 2010, I remember being blown away by the talented and passionate women I met through Facebook’s scholarship program and the conference itself. In particular, one of the first GHC scholarship recipients I met, Jenny Yuen, later went on to join Facebook as a full-time engineer and just presented her latest work at the f8 Developers Conference last week.
Since then, each time my colleagues and I go back we look forward to connecting with new and old friends from across the tech industry and around the world. In addition to traveling with many of the female engineers, execs, and allies from throughout the company, every year Facebook also brings an amazing and talented group of 25 female computer science students through the Facebook Grace Hopper Scholarship.
As we gear up for another year at Grace Hopper, I’m excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our 7th annual Facebook Grace Hopper Scholarship.
Beginning today, female university students excelling in computer science can apply for one of 25 scholarships to attend the Grace Hopper Conference with Facebook in Phoenix, AZ, from October 6 – 11, 2014. This year’s theme is “Everywhere. Everyone.,” creating an opportunity for all women technologists to network, collaborate, and explore the latest technologies while celebrating the influence of women in computing. The event provides attendees with technical sessions hosted by researchers and industry leaders, professional development sessions for attendees at all career levels, and a career fair for aspiring undergraduate and graduate students.
When I first joined Facebook in 2009, the company was much smaller than it is today, and the community of women in technology was just forming. Since then, each year we’ve continued to both invest in and increase the size of our internal community and our involvement with external programs and initiatives. From new college graduates just joining the company to our CTO Mike Schroepfer, the dedication and effort put into bringing diversity to technology and engineering is something that permeates our culture and makes me proud to work at Facebook.
I look forward to being part of Facebook’s seventh year at Grace Hopper and joining technologists from around the world as we work to build and strengthen our community as we tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Award Includes
- Paid registration fee for the Grace Hopper Conference
- Paid travel and lodging expenses, including a pre-Grace Hopper Conference program in Phoenix that includes tech talks, mentoring sessions, and sightseeing from October 7 – October 8, 2014
- Additional $200 meal stipend
Important Dates
- Monday, June 16, 2014: Applications for the Grace Hopper Scholarship must be submitted in full.
- Friday, June 27, 2014: Award recipients will be notified by email of their acceptance.
- Tuesday, October 6 – Saturday, October 11, 2014: Award recipients must be available to attend during this timeframe.
Eligibility
- You must be enrolled full-time at a college or university (in the US or internationally) and pursuing a computer science, computer engineering, or related technical major.
- International applicants are welcome, but you will be responsible for securing your own visa to attend the conference.
- You must be available between Tuesday, October 6 – Saturday, October 11, 2014 to take full advantage of Facebook’s pre-conference program.
- Other criteria as decided by Facebook at its sole discretion. Facebook complies with all equal opportunity laws.
